I am a 26 year old woman with PFFD. I am one of twins, and my twin brother was born with no abnormalities. I grew up a very normal life, and never let my condition rule my life. I received my first prosthesis when I was 1 years old. I have always been very active and received a new prosthesis about every year. I had my first and only surgery when I was 19 years old and that was a partial amputation. It was to allow my prosthesis to be more comfortable. I am now married and my husband and I are discussing starting a family. I would love to hear from other women with PFFD. I am nervous about possibly having children as I'm unsure if my hip could stand the extra weight. I just found this site today and I'm excited about hearing from others just like me!

Childbirth
I have had two children. The weight of pregnancy was no problem, but of course I kept weight gain in check. My balance was affected, but mainly in the last 2 months. I am included in a book on childbirth experiences by women with disabilities. If you are interested, email me and I will give you the title and my "book name". It goes into details of delivery considerations and medical issues.
pffd and pregnancy
Hi! I was born with pffd in 1938 so I am 71 years old. I was married at age 24 and had my first child when 26. No hip problems from pregnancy. I had another boy at age 26 and a 3rd boy at age 34. The ball is in a shallow-formed hip socket so I walk with a noticeable limp but never in any pain. I just have never found a prosthetist who knows what components to use in fitting an above knee prosthesis to someone with a short femur bone and shallow-formed hip where the ball isn't in a normal socket. I always feel like I am not getting enough hip support. I wear a waist belt and that helps some as it wraps around the prosthesis so the prosthesis feels more like a part of me.
Who is your prosthetist? Did you find one that sees enough PFFD people to know what type of knee, foot, and socket are best for PFFD people that have had foot amputation above ankle joint? Maybe you can help me on that.
Don't worry about pregnancy hurting your hip. I have the 3 boys and now 8 grandchildren and 3 great, grandchildren. None of them were born with any defect.
Hope you and your husband experience the birth of a child or children. Best Wishes. You can email me at bevfllr@yahoo.com
