I had posted some information earlier about bike modifications and decided to look for more information since there was such a response. I must say I founded THE NICEST BIKE MAN IN THE WORLD who knows ALL about bike modifications for amputees. He's done many modifications and is familiar with options for both upper and lower extremity amputees. He told me it was OK to put his information up. His name is WALLY TUNISON and is phone number is 732-946-9080. He also has a website, www.bicyclehub.com. This guy knows so much about bike modifications, it will blow your mind! Thanks everyone. I'm certainly more inspired now to ride my own bike, which has been collecting dust recently.
Fixed gear bike
Jen,
I cannot thank you enough for the description of the modifications that you had done to your bike. I printed it out, and took it with me to a bike shop today. My modified bike should be ready for pick up on Tuesday! I am so excited; I haven't been able to ride a bike since before my leg lengthening when I was 11. For 20 years I've wished that I could ride a bike; now it looks like I'll be able to again.
I had to get a kid sized bike, which I figured, and the shop had to order the hub. With the modification that they make, it's called a fixed gear bike and it allows the one pedal to propel back up on its own. The bike that I chose was a bit expensive, but the modification is easy for them to do and is only going to cost me $40 extra.
I'll post again once I pick up my bike. Thanks again!

Baby steps!
Dave,
If it works and I can actually ride it, you bet I'll put some pics on facebook. I'm really excited about the possibility. We have a lot of rail trails around here and it would be great to get out and enjoy them. I'll let you know how it goes!
No, Thank you!
That's awesome. I can't wait to hear how it goes! It should be ME thanking YOU. I couldn't remember the name of the hub until I looked into it again. I think I'll start riding again too. Of course.. hahaha, funny story- in college I got hit by a car while I was riding my bike and, among others things, severely dislocated my right shoulder. Since then I've had chronic shoulder dislocation and will be having surgery probably soon. Ah well. You win some, you lose some! But as soon as I'm put back together again, a'riding I will go! Take care and have fun! Oh, and wear a helmet... probably goes without saying, but I wasn't when I got hit and I'm lucky to still be here!
