The song is inspired by and written for Joseph Merrick (sometimes called John Merrick), The Elephant Man. I saw that movie as a young child and, although my 'condition' is extremely mild compared to his, I really connected with him in that movie. I would watch that movie once in a while as a child and just cry and I think it really was a huge emotional outlet for me as a kid.
